Being a dog parent can be one of the most rewarding experiences life has to offer. Unfortunately, however, it can also come with unexpected vet bills and unknown medical issues for your beloved pet. This was the case for me recently with my best friend, Opie. After taking Opie to the vet for a checkup, we were shocked to learn that he was showing signs of an illness that could require extensive treatment. Facing medical uncertainty with my beloved pup was terrifying.
The emotional toll of not knowing what is wrong with your dog can be overwhelming. There are so many questions and so few answers. It can be heartbreaking to see your pup in pain and not know how to help them. Every moment of uncertainty feels like eternity. It can also be frightening, not knowing what to expect or what treatments may be necessary. As a pet parent, it is natural to want the best for your pup and to make sure they are safe and healthy.
When I adopted Opie, I knew that I also wanted to get pet insurance as a financial preventative measure. I wanted to make sure that if we were ever faced with a medical emergency, we would have many more options available to us without the burden of financial strain during such a difficult time. With pet insurance, we did not have to worry about the cost of treatments or the financial burden of an unexpected vet bill. I was relieved to have the peace of mind that we were financially protected in the event of an unexpected illness.
Though pet insurance does not protect against the emotional uncertainty or the fear of not knowing what is wrong with your pup, it does provide financial relief during a time when you need it the most. Having pet insurance gave us the freedom to focus on what was best for Opie, instead of worrying about how we would pay for his care.
With pet insurance, it is important to make sure you are getting the best coverage for your pup. We use Embrace pet insurance for Opie and are very pleased with their service. We have a $200 deductible and are reimbursed 80% of any accident or illness visit. Submitting a claim is also very easy – we just upload our invoice into the online portal and then receive a check in the mail.
There are many different options for coverage based on your needs. Embrace offers plans with varying levels of coverage and deductible amounts. It was important to me that we found a plan that was tailored to our needs while providing the financial safety net that comes with pet insurance. We felt confident that Embrace would be able to provide us with the coverage we needed and the financial peace of mind we sought.
No matter how much we love our pups, we may never fully understand what they are going through when they are sick or injured. We all wish our dogs could talk and tell us what is wrong. Instead, we have to be detectives and figure out what is going on. As a pet parent, it can be heartbreaking to not know what is wrong with your pup and how to help them.
My heart goes out to any of you who are facing medical uncertainty with your sweet pup. I understand how difficult and scary it can be, and I am sending my love and support. I hope that you will find the answers you are looking for and that your pup will get better soon.
If you are in need of pet insurance for financial protection, I am including a link below to the insurance that we used for Opie. We found it to be the best coverage for our needs and it provided the financial peace of mind we were looking for.
Take care, friend, and kiss your pup for us.

Thank you for sharing Opie’s story. I’ve never had pet insurance on my animals (I know, stupid!) and my last pup cost me about $80,000 through the course of her 13 year life with me. She had so many issues from the very beginning and everything would have been pre-existing so I never got insurance. I don’t regret spending the money on her at all but I also don’t know why I didn’t get insurance when I adopted my new pup about a year ago. She’s 3 years old and super healthy but you just never now. I literally just now signed up for Embrace. It looks like great coverage for a reasonable amount per month and they had great reviews. Thanks so much for the reminder…I feel so good now knowing I won’t have have huge bills for her!
Hi Laura!
Thank you so much for reading about this and checking out Embrace!
Your story sounds like me with my first rescue girl! We were together for about 12 years and my vets office would joke that they were going to build a wing onto the office and name it after us because we spent so much time and money there. Our journey together inspired my action to get pet insurance for Opie since he was young when he came into my life. Wishing you a long and healthy journey with peace of mind!!
Thank you for sharing Opie’s story and also this reminder for all of us as pet parents. I am on my 3rd pup with health insurance and after my first that we got insurance on and the experience we had and to take the financial stress out of a difficult diagnosis process was such a relief. I will never go without it. Even as a veterinary technician I will never go without and cannot recommend it enough as I watch people go through the process from the other side as well. The claims process is always getting easier and we recently at the hospital I work for even are able to offer the clients the option for us to contact the insurance company directly with the estimate we give clients and get pre approval to make the process even easier for pet parents. I have trupanion.
